Why you’ll love this recipe

If you’re looking for a meal that's both easy and satisfying, you’ve found it. These slow cooker meatballs come together quickly, making them perfect for busy weeknights or when you just want to relax on a Sunday afternoon. Alex loves helping shape the meatballs, and it's always a fun family activity for us. Plus, the slow cooker does all the work, letting you focus on what matters most: spending time with family around the dinner table.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 egg (beaten)
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese
  • 24 ounces marinara sauce
  • 14 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 1 Tablespoon minced garlic
  • ½ onion (finely diced)
  • 1 Tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper

Step-by-step instructions

Slow Cooker Meatballs

  1. Combine the meatball ingredients in a medium bowl. Stir to combine and let sit while you prepare the sauce.
  2. Put the sauce ingredients in the container of a slow cooker and stir to combine.
  3. Use a 1 Tablespoon measuring spoon to measure portions of the meatball mixture, gently form it into balls and put them into the sauce in the slow cooker, stirring to coat.
  4. Cook on low heat for 3 to 4 hours or until the internal temperature of the meatballs reaches 165 degrees F.
  5. Serve over your favorite pasta.

Recipe tips & variations

Feel free to experiment with the seasoning to suit your taste. Sometimes we swap out ground beef for a mix of pork and beef for extra flavor. If you're looking for a spicier kick, adding a pinch of red pepper flakes does the trick.

Storage & reheating

Slow Cooker Meatballs

These meatballs are fantastic for meal prep! Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, just pop them in the microwave or warm them on the stove. If you’re freezing them, make sure they’re completely cool first. They’ll keep in the freezer for up to three months.

FAQs

Can I use ground turkey instead of beef for slow cooker meatballs?

Absolutely! Ground turkey works just as well. It’s a lighter alternative that my family also enjoys.

Do I need to brown the meatballs before putting them in the slow cooker?

Nope! That’s the beauty of this recipe. There's no need to brown them. Just pop them straight into the sauce.

Can I make slow cooker meatballs ahead of time or freeze them?

Yes, you can make them ahead. Prepare the meatballs, and store them in the fridge until you're ready to cook. They also freeze well, perfect for those busy weeknights.

How do I keep slow cooker meatballs from falling apart?

The key is not to overwork the meat mixture. Gently mix and form them into balls. Using the right ratio of ingredients also helps them hold together nicely.
