I first made this Oreo dirt cake when Alex was 10 and begged for something with worms in it for his birthday. I was skeptical, honestly. A dessert called dirt? But one bite in, and I understood. It's now the treat my kids request most, and Donald sneaks squares of it straight from the fridge at night.

We love serving it at summer cookouts with a big pitcher of classic homemade lemonade. The two together? Pure backyard happiness.

Why You Will Like This Recipe

  • No baking required. Your oven stays off, which is a lifesaver in our tiny Manhattan kitchen during July.
  • Only 20 minutes of prep. The fridge does the rest of the work while you do literally anything else.
  • Simple ingredients. Pudding mix, Oreos, cream cheese, milk, and cream. Nothing fancy or hard to find.
  • Kids can help. Sarah is in charge of crushing the cookies at our house, and she takes the job very seriously.
  • Rich and creamy layers. Chocolate pudding plus tangy cream cheese plus fluffy whipped cream. Every spoonful has a little of everything.
  • Great for making ahead. It actually needs chill time, so it's a smart pick for parties and potlucks.

Simple Ingredients For Oreo Dirt Cake

Here's everything you need. I always keep most of this in my pantry anyway.

  • 1 package (3.4 ounces) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 1 package (3.4 ounces) instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 30 Oreo cookies, divided (any chocolate sandwich cookie works)
  • 8 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 3 cups cold whole milk
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon confectioners sugar

A few quick notes from my kitchen. Whole milk gives you the thickest pudding, so I wouldn't swap in skim here. Room temperature cream cheese is a must, because cold cream cheese turns lumpy no matter how long you beat it. I learned that the hard way on my second test batch. And if you only have unsalted butter, add a tiny pinch of salt to the crust.

Description

If you need a dessert that disappears fast, this Oreo dirt cake is it. Creamy chocolate pudding, a sweet cream cheese layer, fluffy whipped cream, and crushed Oreos in every single bite. No oven needed, and just 20 minutes of hands on work.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (3.4 ounces) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 1 package (3.4 ounces) instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 30 Oreo cookies, divided (any chocolate sandwich cookie works)
  • 8 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 3 cups cold whole milk
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon confectioners sugar

Instructions

  1. Lightly butter or spray an 8x8 inch baking dish and set it aside.
  2. In a large bowl, beat both pudding mixes with the cold milk for 3 to 4 minutes until thickened. Pop it in the fridge while you work on the crust.
  3. Crush 20 of the Oreos into small crumbs with a few chunky bits.
  4. Pour the melted butter over the crushed cookies and stir with a fork until evenly coated.
  5. Press the mixture firmly into the bottom of your dish. The back of a measuring cup works great for packing it down.
  6. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese and granulated sugar until smooth and creamy.
  7. Spread it gently over the cookie crust in little dollops using an offset spatula.
  8. Spread the chilled pudding evenly over the cream cheese layer.
  9. In another bowl, beat the heavy cream with the confectioners sugar until stiff peaks form.
  10. Spread the whipped cream over the pudding layer.
  11. Crush the remaining 10 Oreos and sprinkle them over the top. That's your dirt!
  12. Chill for at least 3 hours before cutting into squares.

Notes

Whole milk gives you the thickest pudding, so don't swap in skim. Room temperature cream cheese is a must, because cold cream cheese turns lumpy no matter how long you beat it. If you only have unsalted butter, add a tiny pinch of salt to the crust. Don't cut it early, the layers need those 3 hours to set, or you'll get a delicious puddle instead of clean squares. It tastes even better on day two, once the cookie crumbs soften into the layers a bit.

How To Make Oreo Dirt Cake Step By Step

This comes together in four easy layers. I've broken it down so nothing feels confusing.

Start With The Pudding

  1. Lightly butter or spray an 8x8 inch baking dish and set it aside.
  2. In a large bowl, beat both pudding mixes with the cold milk using a hand mixer. It takes about 3 to 4 minutes to thicken up. Pop it in the fridge while you work on the crust.

Build The Cookie Crust

  1. Crush 20 of the Oreos into small pieces. I put mine in a zip top bag and let Sarah go at it with a rolling pin. You want small crumbs with a few chunky bits.
  2. Pour the melted butter over the crushed cookies and stir with a fork until everything looks evenly coated.
  3. Press the mixture firmly into the bottom of your dish. The back of a measuring cup works great for packing it down.

Add The Cream Cheese Layer

  1. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese and granulated sugar until smooth and creamy.
  2. Spread it gently over the cookie crust. Little dollops spread with an offset spatula make this way easier. If you glob it all in the middle, the crust shifts around. This happened to me once, and the layers looked like a toddler made them.
  3. Spread the chilled pudding evenly over the cream cheese layer.

Whip The Cream And Finish

  1. In another bowl, beat the heavy cream with the confectioners sugar until stiff peaks form. When you lift the beaters, the peaks should stand up straight.
  2. Spread the whipped cream over the pudding layer.
  3. Crush the remaining 10 Oreos and sprinkle them over the top. That's your dirt!
  4. Chill for at least 3 hours before cutting into squares. If you freeze it instead, let it sit on the counter for 15 minutes before slicing.

The waiting is honestly the hardest part. Alex checks the fridge roughly every 20 minutes.

Storage And Make Ahead Tips

Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap or a fitted lid, and it keeps beautifully in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Honestly? I think it tastes even better on day two, once the cookie crumbs soften into the layers a bit.

You can also freeze it for up to a month. Wrap the whole dish in plastic wrap, then add a layer of foil. Thaw it overnight in the fridge before serving.

No reheating needed here, which is one more reason I love it. This dessert is meant to be served cold, straight from the fridge. Perfect for hot city summers when nobody wants the oven on.

Fun Variations For Your Oreo Dirt Cake

I've tested this one a lot over the years, and here are my honest tips and twists.

  • Add gummy worms. This is the classic kid move. Tuck a few between the layers and poke some out of the top. Alex still insists on this at 12.
  • Try different Oreo flavors. Mint Oreos are amazing here. Golden Oreos with vanilla pudding make a fun blonde version too.
  • Serve it in cups. Layer everything in clear plastic cups for parties. Everyone gets their own little dirt cup, and cleanup is a breeze.
  • Make it a holiday dessert. Crushed candy canes on top at Christmas? So good. Want more chocolate treats for gifting? My Oreo mint chocolate truffles pair really well with this idea.
  • Watch the chill time. Don't cut it early. I know it's tempting, but the layers need those 3 hours to set, or you'll get a delicious puddle instead of clean squares.

Oreo Dirt Cake FAQ

Can I make Oreo dirt cake ahead of time?

Yes, and I actually recommend it! I make mine the night before parties, and it's always a hit. The layers set up firmer, the cookies soften slightly, and the flavors settle together. Just keep it covered in the fridge until you're ready to serve.

How long does Oreo dirt cake last in the refrigerator?

It stays fresh for 3 to 4 days when covered tightly. In my experience, it rarely survives past day two in our apartment. The whipped cream layer can start to weep a little after day four, so it's best enjoyed within that window.

Can I freeze Oreo dirt cake?

You can! Wrap it well in plastic wrap and foil, and it freezes for up to a month. I did this before a school event once, and it thawed beautifully overnight in the fridge. You can also serve it partly frozen, almost like an ice cream cake. Just let it rest at room temperature for 15 minutes first so it slices cleanly.

Do I have to use homemade whipped cream, or can I use whipped topping?

An 8 ounce tub of whipped topping works just fine as a shortcut. I've done it on rushed weeks, and nobody complained. That said, homemade whipped cream takes 2 minutes with a hand mixer and tastes fresher, so I make it from scratch whenever I can.
