Air Fryer Potato Chips Recipe: A Crunchy Delight

When my kids burst through the door from school, one phrase I often hear is: "Can we have chips, Mom?" It's not always easy keeping up with Alex's ever-growing appetite and Sarah's favorite snacks. So, I found a solution that’s not only delicious but also healthier than store-bought versions: Air Fryer Potato Chips. They’re simple to make and loved by the whole family.

Why you’ll love this recipe

Our air fryer potato chips are incredibly easy to prepare with just a few ingredients. They are crispy, satisfying, and perfect as a quick snack or a side for your family meals. Plus, they require minimal cleanup – a win for any busy parent!

Ingredients

  • 2 large baking potatoes
  • 6 cups ice water
  • Non-Aerosol olive oil cooking spray
  • ½ teaspoon seasoned salt
  • Optional garnish – fresh chopped parsley or chives

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Place the thinly sliced potatoes into a large bowl with the ice water. Allow the potato slices to soak for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Drain the starchy ice water and rinse the potato slices under fresh cold water.
  3. Place the potato slices onto a large baking sheet lined with paper towels, and spread them into an even layer.
  4. Using another paper towel, pat the potato slices very dry.
  5. Spray the dried potato slices evenly, on both sides, with olive oil spray.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F. Place a single layer of olive oil-coated potatoes into the basket of the air fryer.
  7. Air fry the potato chips for 15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through cooking.
  8. Check the chips for the last 2-3 minutes to prevent burning.
  9. Place the air fryer potato chips onto a serving plate and sprinkle with the seasoned salt while they are still hot.
  10. Garnish with chopped parsley or chives if desired.

Recipe tips & variations

  • Slice consistency: For the best results, ensure you're slicing the potatoes as uniformly as possible. This helps them cook evenly.
  • Spice it up: Feel free to get creative with the seasoning. Paprika, garlic powder, or even a sprinkle of cheese can add a tasty twist.
  • Potato type: While baking potatoes are my go-to, sweet potatoes or Yukon Golds also work beautifully.

Storage & reheating

If you manage to have any leftovers, keep them in an airtight container. They’re best enjoyed fresh but will stay crispy for a day or two.

For reheating, a quick pop back in the air fryer for a few minutes can revive their initial crispness.

FAQs

How do you make potato chips crispy in the air fryer?

The key is ensuring the potato slices are completely dry before you begin air frying. This helps achieve that wonderful crunch we're all after.

Why do you need to soak potato slices before air frying?

Soaking helps remove excess starch, which can prevent them from crisping up properly.

Can you use other types of potatoes for homemade air fryer chips?

Absolutely! Experiment with sweet potatoes or Yukon Golds for different flavors and textures.

How do you store homemade air fryer potato chips so they stay fresh?

Keep your chips in an airtight container at room temperature to maintain their crispiness.
