Asian sesame broccoli this …

Okay, I have to tell you about this crispy asian roasted broccoli recipe because it might be the easiest side dish I've made all year. It's sweet, it's a little spicy, and it comes together with almost zero effort once the oven does its thing.

  • Crispy Asian Roasted Broccoli

I started making this on nights when I forgot to buy fresh vegetables (it happens more than I'd like to admit) and only had a bag of frozen broccoli sitting in the freezer. Turns out, roasting it straight from frozen gives you these crispy, caramelized edges that taste way better than steamed broccoli ever could.

Alex isn't usually a broccoli guy, but he asked for seconds the first time I made this. Sarah loves dunking hers in extra hot honey. And Donald says it tastes like something you'd order at a restaurant, not something that started as a bag from the freezer aisle.

This pairs perfectly with something like my honey garlic chicken thighs, which is another one of our regular weeknight dinners around here.

why you'll like this crispy asian roasted broccoli recipe

  • It starts frozen, so there's no chopping or washing involved
  • It only takes 35 minutes from start to finish
  • The sweet and spicy sauce gives it real depth of flavor
  • It gets genuinely crispy in the oven, not soggy like steamed broccoli
  • It works as a side for almost any dinner you're already making
  • It's naturally gluten free if you swap in tamari for the soy sauce

ingredients for crispy asian roasted broccoli

  • 1 (12 oz) bag frozen broccoli florets
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (or tamari for gluten free)
  • ½ tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil

For the garnish:

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon hot honey (optional, but I highly recommend it)

A quick note on ingredients. I've tried this with olive oil instead of avocado oil and it still works fine, it just doesn't get quite as crispy at high heat. And if you're out of soy sauce, coconut aminos work in a pinch too.

Description

This crispy asian roasted broccoli might be the easiest side dish you'll make all year. It's sweet, a little spicy, and comes together with almost zero effort once the oven does its thing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (12 oz) bag frozen broccoli florets
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (or tamari for gluten free)
  • ½ tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil (for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon hot honey, optional (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F and slide an empty sheet pan in while it heats up.
  2. Once the oven is ready, pull the pan out carefully and spread the frozen broccoli florets across it in a single layer without overcrowding.
  3. Roast the broccoli plain, no oil yet, for 20 minutes, giving it a stir halfway through.
  4. While that's roasting, whisk together the soy sauce, lemon juice, garlic powder, and avocado oil in a small bowl.
  5. Once the first 20 minutes are up, pull the broccoli out and drizzle the sauce over it, tossing gently to coat.
  6. Pop it back in the oven for another 15 to 20 minutes, flipping once halfway through, until the edges look crispy and slightly charred in spots.
  7. Once it's out of the oven, drizzle with sesame oil and hot honey if using, then sprinkle sesame seeds over the top and toss once more.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer at 375°F for about 5 minutes rather than the microwave to keep the crispy texture. Freezing works, but the texture won't be quite as crispy after a second reheat.

how to make crispy asian roasted broccoli

getting the broccoli started

Preheat your oven to 400°F and slide an empty sheet pan in while it heats up. This little trick makes a big difference. A hot pan means the broccoli starts crisping the second it hits the metal, instead of steaming in its own moisture.

Once the oven is ready, pull the pan out carefully (it's hot) and spread the frozen broccoli florets across it in a single layer. Don't overcrowd the pan here. If the florets are piled on top of each other, they'll steam instead of roast, and you'll lose that crispy texture we're going for.

Roast the broccoli plain, no oil yet, for 20 minutes. Give it a stir halfway through so it browns evenly.

adding the sauce

While that's roasting, whisk together the soy sauce, lemon juice, garlic powder, and avocado oil in a small bowl. This takes about two minutes and it's the only real prep work in this whole recipe.

Once the first 20 minutes are up, pull the broccoli out and drizzle the sauce over it. Toss everything gently so each piece gets coated.

Pop it back in the oven for another 15 to 20 minutes, flipping once halfway through, until the edges look crispy and slightly charred in spots. That charring is where all the flavor lives, so don't panic if some pieces look a little dark.

finishing it off

Once it's out of the oven, drizzle the broccoli with sesame oil and hot honey if you're using it. Sprinkle sesame seeds over the top and give it one last toss.

Honestly, I always sneak a piece straight off the pan before it even makes it to the table. Every single time.

storage and reheating

This broccoli keeps well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. I like using glass containers so the sauce doesn't stain the plastic ones.

To reheat, skip the microwave if you can. It turns the broccoli soft and a little sad. Instead, pop it back in the oven or air fryer at 375°F for about 5 minutes to bring the crispy texture back.

If you want to freeze leftovers, you can, but keep in mind the texture won't be quite as crispy once it's reheated a second time.

tips and variations for this asian roasted broccoli

Have you ever wondered if you can make this without any spice at all? You absolutely can. Just skip the hot honey and stick with regular honey or even a small drizzle of maple syrup instead.

A few things I've learned from making this more times than I can count:

  • Don't skip the dry roast step first. Adding sauce too early leads to soggy broccoli instead of crispy edges
  • If your broccoli florets are on the smaller side, check them a few minutes early so they don't overcook
  • A squeeze of fresh lime at the end brightens everything up if you have one on hand
  • Swap the sesame seeds for crushed peanuts for a little crunch and a different flavor
  • Add a pinch of red pepper flakes if you want it spicier than the hot honey alone provides

frequently asked questions

can you roast broccoli directly from frozen

Yes, and honestly it works better than I expected the first time I tried it. The high heat of the oven crisps up the edges without needing to thaw anything first, which saves a good chunk of time on a busy night.

how do you make frozen broccoli crispy in the oven

The trick is roasting it plain for the first 20 minutes before adding any sauce or oil. A hot pan and enough space between florets also makes a big difference in getting those crispy edges.

what can I serve with asian roasted broccoli

This goes with pretty much anything. We love it next to grilled chicken, salmon, or a simple stir fry. It also works well alongside rice bowls if you want something a little more filling.

can I make asian broccoli without hot honey

Definitely. Regular honey works fine if you want it sweet without the heat. You can also leave it out entirely and just use the sesame oil and seeds for flavor.

final thoughts on this crispy asian roasted broccoli

This recipe proves that a bag of frozen vegetables can turn into something genuinely good with barely any effort. It's become one of our go to sides, especially on nights when I'm short on time but still want something that tastes like I put real thought into dinner.
